Who are we?
VSSQ began in 1986 as a group called Silver Star Quilting Squares, when a quilting enthusiast put an ad in the local paper asking if anyone was interested in quilting. From an initial group of 5 to 6 women, we have grown to approximately 142 members in 2011. In 1999 the name of the group was changed to Vernon Silver Star Quilters. The guild's main focus is to promote quilting through literature, workshops, seminars, demonstrations and quilt shows. We also provide community services by donations of quilts, donations to other charities (depending on needs and funds) and by providing displays if requested.
Vernon Silver Star Quilters meet from September to June on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. Meetings are from 9:30 to 11:00 and are held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 5151 Alain Road, off Silver Star Road, just east of Butcher Boys. Membership: $30.00/year.
We are a diverse group of women, coming from all parts of the world, with a common interest in quilting and fabric!! Meetings are a great time to catch up with friends, make new friends and learn new things. The first meeting of the month is our business meeting, with a break for coffee, goodies, and visiting followed by Show and Tell. The second meeting is more informal and is generally just a few announcements, coffee time and a workshop, trunk show or demonstration for the remainder of the meeting followed by Show and Tell. The guild also offers among other things, workshops, guest speakers/teachers, trunk shows, demos and two retreats a year. We have a library with a great selection of quilting books, patterns, rulers and magazines all of which may be borrowed. There are also social days, road trips, pot lucks and several Subgroups.
A few years ago a couple of members instituted a very successful new group called Newcomers which is as it implies, a group for new members. They are assigned an MLS'er (Member of Long Standing) who in essence, helps them feel comfortable in such a large group and answers any questions they may have regarding the functioning of the guild. They are a very active group and have several functions throughout the guild year.
Every third year the guild hosts a quilt show (undoubtedly one of the best around). 2010 saw a very successful show, Legacy of Quilts VII, held at the Vernon Recreation Centre, and now we are in the planning stages for our next show which will be October of 2013. See Special Events for more information.
